Here is the short answer: it is not always possible.
But here is how it works when it does. If the picture has a "long" name, say
http://image57.webshots.com/657/4/85/11/2806485110094114705ZZinOh_fs.jpg
you erase the last _fs.jpg or _ph.pg, replace the numbers between the slashes with the word photo,
and the first image57 (or whatever it is) by community. For the above example, this gives,
http://community.webshots.com/photo/2806485110094114705ZZinOh
However, for a picture with a "short" name, like
http://image09.webshots.com/9/8/85/83/123588583rPJFXG_fs.jpg
this will not work: the album link is
http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/1123588583053322502rPJFXG
and you see that there are additional digits added to the name of the picture. These digits cannot be guessed or calculated from the picture name; they depend not on the picture or album, but on the user - and if you knew the user, you wouldn't need to do all these acrobatics anyway.
I hope this answers your question.
By the way, what happened to the old FAQ?
